Mission and Purpose

The Native & Indigenous Council addresses the needs and concerns of Native American and Alaskan Native staff, faculty, and postdocs at the University of California, Berkeley. The Council functions uniquely as a network promoting cultural awareness and educating non-Native Americans on the campus and within the local Bay Area.

Goals

The Native & Indigenous Council (Council) is a faculty, staff, and postdoc organization at the University of California, Berkeley, established to: 
  • promote community amongst faculty, staff, and postdocs that identify as Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, First Nation, or who otherwise identify as Indigenous;
  • foster communication and advocacy among other on-campus organizations, Native & Indigenous programs in the Bay Area, and the greater community; 
  • provide support to and advocacy for faculty, staff, and postdocs who identify as  Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, First Nation, or who otherwise identify as Indigenous, for educational opportunities such as professional development, volunteer programs, and mentorship;
  • promote the recruitment and retention of students, faculty, and staff who identify as Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, First Nation, or who otherwise identify as Indigenous.
